An accused mugger jailed for more than six months walked free in 10 minutes when the robbery victim failed to identify him at a Bronx trial, the Daily News has learned.

Shawaan Christian, who faced up to 15 years behind bars, was thrilled by the shockingly quick Feb. 15 verdict on charges of mugging a street vendor walking home from his mosque in July 2015.

Yahya Conteh twice could not pick Christian out as his assailant — even though the accused man was seated a short distance away at the defense table.

“It’s mind-boggling,” said defense attorney Cary London. “It’s a reflection that there is no prosecutorial discretion in the Bronx for anything. They are supposed to actually care about innocence.”

Conteh, a senior citizen from Gambia, testified through an interpreter that he was headed home from prayers about 4:30 a.m. on July 19, 2015, when he was jumped.

The witness said he was first put in a headlock by an attacker he could not see.

A second man, he said, approached from the front and punched him — allowing him a view of the man’s face. Days later, Conteh spotted Christian on the street.

Conteh was less certain under direct examination from Assistant District Attorney Tammy O’Hara. Asked if the man who attacked him was “in the courtroom today,” his response was baffling.

“No, I don’t see him here,” he replied.

When O’Hara asked a second time, his response was exactly the same.
